Founded in 1841 by William II of the Netherlands as grand duke of Luxembourg, initially with four classes, the order of the Crown of Oak passed to five classes and three medals (gold, then vermeil, silver, bronze). Until 1858, grand crosses and grand officers wore the same eight-pointed plaque, which is now worn only by grand officers.
