Small bronze created to honour the famous gemma tailor Valerio Belli il Vicentino (1468- c. 1546),
17th century.
Bronze figure of a youth with a cape reaching to the ground. The standing posture in contrapost in highly refined mannerism. Emphasized dainty feet, elegant hand posture and deliberately slender and slightly over-directed neck carrying a graceful head with a proud look. The forelock also extremely accentuated. The left hand holds a globe-like ball at the hip, the right hand shows a refined finger position. The square, co-cast base bears the inscription in majuscules "VALERIO/ DI BELLI/ DETTO IL/ VICENTINO". Since the aforementioned Di Belli worked as a gem cutter and not as a sculptor, the small statue is probably to be understood as a posthumous memorial-like tribute. Execution by an as yet unspecified high-ranking artist of the 17th century.
Cast bronze, finely worked, entirely in the style of Italian Mannerism. Modern brown and gold presentation base. (12912415) (11)
