Height: 31 cm.
Width: 27 cm.
Depth: 6 cm.
Sicily/ Trapani, 17th century.
Octagonal box frame in ebonized wood, richly inlaid and marginally decorated with gilt plate inlays in the frame, and symmetrical double volutes extending around the frame. The frame is decorated with white enamelled rosettes set with red coral blossoms; the exterior decoration is worked in the same manner. Cast floral applications with small angel heads between the rosettes. In the recess chiselled gold ground, on top a fully sculptured male figure of a saint carved in coral on a bank of clouds, surrounded by winged angel heads. This is probably the local saint Albertus of Trapani. Due to the martyr's palm and the bald forehead, however, I can also think of St. Peter.
The central recess glazed, the gilded decorative overlays partially chased, numerous pieces of coral inserted in the outer surround. Overall in undamaged, impeccable condition. Wooden cover on verso. (12916218) (11)
