Height: 77 cm.
Probably Italy, c. 1580.
Born in Montpellier and venerated as a saint of the plague, he lived between 1295 and 379 and is venerated as one of the Fourteen Helpers. He is always depicted with an open plague wound on his leg and a dog, which is said to have supplied the hermit with bread. Far more rarely - as here - he is also accompanied by an angel who healed the wound. His activity as a doctor is indicated by the black coloured shoulder bag. His headgear refers to his pilgrimage to Rome, with Peter's key and pilgrim's staff on the brim. The large figure is carved and set in round sculpture. Dress and cloak show the typical folding of the 16th century. Both figures on a carved lawn base. Most of the mountings are preserved, one former gilding is rubbed. A.R.
