Height: 15.7 cm.
Plinth diameter: 9 cm.
Northern Germany, 17th century.
The carving group in boxwood on a round plinth. Two torturers and another figure holding Christ's mantle appear almost hen-like against the figure of Jesus standing on a stepping stone with his hands tied behind his back to a twisted column. The baluster-shaped column and the figure of Christ are raised on a pillared temple-like building with a segmental arch in which a reclining figure is carved, probably a foreshadowing of Christ's burial place, with small heads above it. In addition to a dog standing by, of particular interest is the easily overlooked miniature carved figure of a bearded prophet in the fold of Christ's cloak lying on the ground, and especially the rib arches of the martyred man. Beautiful age patina. A.R. (12916216) (11)
