ECCE HOMO Oil on canvas. Doubled. 62.5 x 48 cm. In a gilded magnificent frame with openwork carving of volutes. Christ after the capture in half-length portrait before brown background, here rendered with crown of thorns on his head and a long cane in his right hand, as mocking sign of royal dignity, as well as with a red mocking cloak hanging down over his left shoulder. The incarnate parts deliberately brightening, the head inclined to one side and the head raised, the contours rendered in sfumato. On his left cheek, as well as in the area of his chest, there is a red drop of blood in each case. He has a slightly open mouth and with his shining eyes directed towards heaven he seems to be talking to God the Father. High-quality painting with strong chiaroscuro accentuation in the typical manner of the artist. Occasional retouching. Remark: In the artist's oeuvre further Ecce Homo representations can be found. The motif can often be found in the work of other artists of the 16th and 17th centuries, including Bartolomeo Cesi (1556-1629), Bartolomeo Passarotti (1529-1592), Jusepe de Ribera (1588/91-1652) and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1618-1682).
