Seat height: 42 cm.
Backrest height: 99 cm.
Germany, c. 1800.
Wood, carved, set, gilded. The ensemble á l'Égyptienne consists of four large fauteuils, eight chairs and two canapés. The chairs with their Egyptian masks are a rare example of German furniture art around 1800 and with their design of foliage and patterns bear witness to Napoleon's return from the Nile and the impressions he and his entourage gained. Signs of age and wear
Note:
The style of the ensemble is reminiscent of designs created by Johann Valentin Raab for Nicolas Salins de Monfort for the decoration of the Würzburg Residence Palace. Here the forms, apart from the sphinxes, correspond to our furniture. Similar chairs by Raab with covers by Ludwig Daniel Schmidt-Rumpf are in the Historisches Museum in Frankfurt.
