Feine Régence-Konsole „aux mufles de lions“

73 x 90 x 51 cm. France, c. 1730. Wood, carved and gilded. Above two legs formed by counter-rotating volutes, connected by an à jour worked rocaille field with dragon creatures and mascaron, an open worked frame with rich rocaille and shellwork decoration. The knees with sculpted lion head appliqués and dragons entwining the legs. Overhanging marble top plate in Campan grand mélange following the features of the furniture. The entire ornamental vocabulary of the Régence is represented and points to great sculptors and ornamentalists such as Jules Degoullons, André Lagoupil, Marin Bellan and Pierre Taupin, but also to the architects Gilles-Marie Oppenordt and Nicolas Pineau. Provenance: Collection of Baron Max Fould-Springer (1906-1999) and Cécile de Rothschild (1913-1995), sister of Baron Elie de Rothschild (1917-2007).
