Height: 40 cm each. France, end of the 18th century. The body of each vase ovaloid, on a narrowly indented, turned fluted foot over a square base. Gilt bronze amphora handles to sides, sweeping up over vase rim in oscillation, set with fine foliage, joined by floral festoons. The frieze of the vase rim pierced in repeat, ensuring function. Of particular note is the use of the rare amethyst motherstone for the vase body and lid. Grey-beige and violet predominate in colour. The violet amethyst crystals appear in individual layers of the cut stone. This also on the lid, on which the diagonally running stone banding is particularly visible; crowned by a pine cone above each leaf rosette. The gilding somewhat darkened due to age, giving the pair of vases the appearance of beautiful patina. Gilt bronze interior insert and corresponding gilt bronze underside of lid. A.R.
