Cast bronze, black lacquer patina, on grey cast stone plinth over spindle feet, with surrounding gilt ornamental frieze. The female figure of Greek mythology is also lying on a cushion with raised padding, her legs crossed, her head resting in her hand, her right arm laid over her head. Ariadne, according to legend, was the daughter of the Cretan king Minos, who helped Perseus defeat the Minotaur. According to the writer Hesiod, she was found abandoned and asleep on the beach of the island of Naxos. This aspect was already thematized in Greek imagery.
The figure is a scaled-down copy of the Roman marble figure that is in the Vatican Museums. It was acquired by Pope Julius II in 1512 for the Cortile delle Statue in the Belvedere. The Roman sculpture goes back to a Hellenistic original, created in the Pergamon school of sculpture of the 2nd century B.C. A.R. (12718114) (11)
