Height: 165 cm. Width 142 cm. Depth: 74 cm. Made in 1891 according to the design of Prof. Enrico Taverna di Torino, director of the "Scuola di Incisione sul Corallo" in Torre del Greco (Naples). In the drawer of the furniture there is an extraordinary document, written in elaborate handwritten typography on parchment. All the signatures of the artists involved in the work are recorded on it. The exceptional piece of furniture has a two-part construction. The base is in the form of a desk with side drawers, each above four straight square legs that taper slightly towards the bottom, connected by x-shaped, gilded metal braces in the style of Roman furniture from antiquity. The drawer fronts set with strong knobs, flanked by mermaids set in relief. At the sides, standing at an angle, sculpted winged sphinxes supporting the narrow drawer top. The top covered with oxblood red suede. The central drawer has a retractable panel, with the aforementioned document inside. The top, barely retracting at the sides, is divided into three parts by slender columns made of light travertine. The doors have a black-ground fielding, with tortoiseshell frame surrounds. In the central door large square relief field depicting a kneeling Venus in a shell on a crest of a wave with a dolphin, with a cupid boy on the side. The rectangular side door panels and the panels on the sides of the top section are worked in the same way, each with allegorical figures of the four seasons with their seasonal attributes. In the plinth below the doors, longitudinal reliefs, made of polychrome stone, depicting a Cupid riding a hippocampus while pursuing a stag accompanied by a dog with bow and arrow. The upper finial frieze features sculpted medallions in high relief as well as theatrical masks, fantasy dragons, and ivy and laurel festoons, also laid on light marble. The crowning finial with straight cornice, fitted with a total of six socketed stone vases flanking a central group of putti. On two of the vase bases inscription regarding the awards at the exhibitions "Palermo 1891 - MED. D'ORO" and "MED D'ORO - GENOVA 1892". The putto base inscribed "R. Scvola d'Incisione sul Coralli/ Torre del Greco - Napoli". It is worth mentioning that all these reliefs mentioned, as well as the other ornamental work, are created in different types of stone using mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, coral and other materials. The attached parchment names the furniture "Tipo di Mobilio Artistico in stile Neopompeiano", executed by Vincenzo Palomba and others named in the document. Thus, the furniture can be considered one of the most important Italian museum examples of historicism. The furniture is in impeccable condition. A. R. Exhibitions: The furniture was exhibited at the "Esposizione Nazionale di Palermo" in 1891 and was awarded the gold medal.
