A Rajasthani copper alloy Jain altar of the second tirthankara Ajitanatha. Western India. Late15th century
Seated in meditation on a throne with elephant emblem supported by lions, under a canopy carried by elephants and a backsplat in shape of a makaratorana. The tirthankara is surrounded by various jinas and fan carriers. To the base the Nine Planets and the Wheel of the Law. Long inscription to the reverse with the date samwat 1519 (= 1462 AD). Various silver and copper inlays.
