BOSSUET (Jacques Bénigne). Histoire des Variations des églises protestantes. Paris, Guillaume Deprez et Jean Desessartz, 1734, 4 vols. in-12, XXXIII-[8]-509-[27], [8]-510-[34], [16]-364 and [22]-328 p., full contemporary brown calf, decorated spine, red morocco title-pieces (wear, bottom of 3rd vol. slightly damaged, a few brown stains, traces of wetness). Handwritten ex-libris of the 18th century repeated on the titles. One of Bossuet's major works, in which the author summarizes the controversies against the Protestant Church by a key concept: variation. The multiple destinies and variations around the same doctrine should show us that the Protestant church cannot be the church of Christ and the depository of the faith. The "avertissemens" are a response to Pierre Jurieu's attacks in defense of the Protestants against Bossuet's book. A good copy.
