NORTH INDIA - 19th CENTURY
Two pages from a Baramasa series
Polychrome and gold pigments on paper
Size : 39,5 x 27,2cm. 15,5 x 10,6 in.
Expert : Alexis RENARD
These two pages, decorated on the front and back with four paintings, probably come from a series called Baramasa, literally "Songs of the Seasons", which illustrates the different months and periods of the year according to the Baramasa poetic tradition. The four illustrations depict women in landscapes during the winter months under stormy skies and even in the snow.
The paintings are accompanied by texts in devanagari, and the pages are framed by margins with friezes of flowers and scrolls on a light background.
