Egypt or Near East, Mamluk art, 14th century
Arabic manuscript on ivory paper, 14 leaves, calligraphed on 14 lines per page in "Muhaqqaq" in black ink. 37 titles of suras written in gold surrounded by black, with the separations of the verses marked by a golden rosette dotted with blue and red. Marginal illuminated indications of juz', hizb and sajda, repeated waqf note in the upper margins. The richly illuminated colophon is calligraphed in blue ink on a gold background in a poly-lobed medallion.
Bound in brown morocco, the central panels of which, decorated with tchi clouds, correspond to a 16th-century Ottoman binding.

A Mamluk Quran Juz, Probably Egypt, 14th-15th century
Comprising the 30th juz', Arabic manuscript on paper, 14ff. plus two fly-leaves, each folio with 13ll. of black muhaqqaq, sura headings in gold outlined in black, gold and polychrome rosette verse markers, the colophon set inside a larger gilt and polychrome medallion, with gilt and polychrome spandrels.
