Jacques Callot (1592-1635) - Christ shown to the people - First state / Description: Christ shown to the people; the crowd stands in the foreground; among them, on the left a man holds a cross; with inscription in Latin in lower margin. c.1619/24 Etching with some engraving. First state before the reworking of state two and before the altered text of state three. In state two the background was worked up, it is very light in this first state. The window just at right from the cross also has square hatching while later states have only horizontal lines. On paper with an early watermark (Le Lion a L'étoile) found on the early impressions of Callot's etchings. Etcher: Jacques Callot, Signed bottom left beneath the cross. From an unfinished series of seven on twelve etchings representing the Passion of Christ; the design was made by Callot in Florence and some plates include existing Italian buildings. / Dimensions: 11,10 x 21,30 cm With plate border and good margins.
