Madonna in polychrome and gilded stucco, hollowed out back. The Madonna in bust form holds the Child standing next to her; she is dressed in a red girdled robe and a veil forming a mantle; the Child Jesus, a loincloth around his hips, blesses with his right hand; moulded base.
Tuscany, second half of the 15th century
Height: 42.5 cm - Length: 29.4 cm - Depth: 12 cm
(crack on the shoulders of the Virgin, minor restorations to the polychromy)
This charming group, not devoid of tenderness, is to be compared with a Virgin and Child in the collections of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, attributed to Domenico Rosselli (inv. no. WA 1941-10, fig). Little is known about this Italian sculptor, who was born in 1439 in Pistoia, Tuscany, and ended his life around 1497 in Fossombre, Marche, after working in Bologna, Pisa and Florence.
