LLIBRE DELS QUATRE SENYALS. S.l.n.d. [Catalonia, late 16th century]. Manuscript in-folio, fawn basane, rhombus-rectangle decoration formed of fillets and a cold roulette, gilded fleur-de-lis in the centre, four gilded emblems at the corners representing a cross and bordered by fleurs-de-lis at the ends, ornamented spine (Spanish binding of the 16th century).
Precious manuscript from the end of the 16th century, in a very interesting Spanish binding of the period decorated on the boards with symbols referring to the title of the collection.
The Llibre dels quatre senyals, in French Livre des quatre signes, is a collection of rules for the "Diputatio del General de Catalunya", the central institution of the Catalan government now called "Generalitat". The text was promulgated in 1413 in Barcelona by King Ferdinand I of Aragon and established for the first time the set of rules governing the economic, judicial and administrative life of Catalonia, as well as the function of the "diputat".
The name given to this collection comes from the symbols of the institution.
The Llibre dels quatre senyals circulated for a long time in manuscript form and was first printed in Barcelona in 1634.
