[In Greek]: Epicteti philosophi enchiridion. Arriani dedictis Epicteti libri quatuor. Salamanca, Juan Canova, 1555. In-8, marbled calf, spine decorated, red edges (18th century binding).
Very rare edition in Greek, the first published in Spain.
It is enriched with notes that the Spanish humanist Hernán Núñez de Guzmán had left on his copy of Epictetus, by his former collaborator, the scholar Jacobo Ferando, who was the master of the edition.
Born in Valladolid in 1475, Hernán Núñez de Guzmán was from an illustrious Spanish family. He was a professor of Greek in Alcala de Henares and one of the editors of the famous Cardinal Cisneros Bible, the first polyglot bible. He later became professor of rhetoric at the University of Salamanca, to which he bequeathed his library at his death in 1553.
The edition is dedicated by the printer Juan Canova to the rector of the University of Salamanca, Cristobal Vega.
Head cover worn, rubbing to the binding.
