Susa, 1825 - Milan, 1909 Young girls and street urchins Signed B Giuliano and dated 1893 lower right Oil on panel, 22.5X31.5 cm Provenance: Turin, Galleria d'Arte Fogliato Turin, private collection An original style can be seen in Bartolomeo Giuliano's landscapes and seascapes, which are characterised by an immediate painting style aimed at naturalism. His realist tendency became more pronounced in the 1980s, coinciding with a widespread evolution of taste, which in the artist manifested itself in the depiction of scenes from everyday life. His most satisfactory results are to be found in the works depicting events and episodes from the life and work of Ligurian sailors and fishermen, which he was able to admire at close quarters when he stayed in the village of Quarto al mare from 1883. A pupil of Biscarra and Arienti at the Accademia Albertina in Turin, Giuliano completed his training with a stay in Florence. He took part in the exhibitions of the Promotrice delle Belle Arti of Turin from 1846 with landscapes, historical and literary subjects. In 1857 he was appointed assistant to the chair of drawing at the Accademia Albertina, held by Enrico Gamba, while from 1860 he obtained the same position at the Accademia di Brera with Raffaele Casnedi, and moved to Milan where he began, from 1859, to participate in Milanese exhibitions, but he always kept in touch with the Turin exhibitions and kept alive his interest in history paintings, as shown by the Passaggio per Susa dell'imperatore Federico Barbarossa (Passage through Susa of the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa) in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Turin, as well as in genre painting and landscape painting with figures.
