Livorno 1858 - 1939 Villa Looyd Signed Ulvi Liegi and dated 918 lower left Oil on cardboard, 36.5X44.8 cm Provenance: Milan, Galleria Carini Milan, private collection Luigi Levi, in art Ulvi Liegi, studied drawing with Luigi Corsi and painting with Carlo Markò: He then attended the Academy of the School of Figures of Professor Ciaranfi and soon freed himself, following the advice of Telemaco Signorini, of whom he was a friend and admirer, from every academic influence and completely abandoned himself to the direct study of life. He exhibited for the first time at the Exhibition of the Society of Fine Arts in Florence in 1882, and two years later sent three landscapes to Turin: A Sunset along the Mugnone, A Grey Day in the Fields and An Autumn Effect. In Venice, in 1887, After the Rain, On the Road to Romito in Florence, A Winter Day, On the Evening at Manzollo near Florence. In 1898 he exhibited in Paris with works that aroused unconditional praise from the masters of French Impressionism, including Degas, Pissarro and Monet. In time, while remaining faithful to the impressionistic technique, he gave his painting a firmer content and a more lively character. In this second manner Levi showed himself to be a colourist of violent, vivid lyricism, at times pushed to the point of excess but always severely contained within a characteristic line. From 1921 he was president of the Gruppo Labronico and exhibited at the Rome Biennial (1921-25) and then at the Venice Biennial (1928-36). In 1932 the Municipality of Leghorn awarded him a gold medal for his activity as a cultural promoter. His works are in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Rome (Vecchie bilance da pesca a Bocca d'Arno, Il glicine a Villa Girandot, Suore sulla spiaggetta dell'Ardenza) in the Galleria Mussolini there is Baite in Valsugana, while in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna Pitti in Florence: Strada solitaria, La modellina, Casolari a Roncegano and La via di San Gervasio are preserved today.
