Vasto, 1820 - Naples, 1870 Le sorgenti del Serino Signed N Palizzi bottom right Oil on canvas, cm 50X70 Nicola Palizzi's pictorial conception was strengthened following his trip to Paris in 1856, after having been in Rome and Florence, where he acquired some influence from his brother Giuseppe. In 1859 he was appointed honorary professor of the Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Naples with Gabriele and Consalvo Carelli. In the 1860s his harmony with Cammarano and the so-called Resina School was consolidated, as can be seen in some of his landscape paintings. The spatial research based on a perspective layout recalls the experiences of Posillipo, where the attention to the landscape is the protagonist of his Neapolitan views, with seascapes or sunny countryside, animated by romantic atmospheres. He was unrivalled for the harmony and chromatic richness he managed to put into his works. Besides being a landscape painter, Nicola Palizzi is known for being one of the illustrators, together with his brother Filippo, of the work Usi e costumi di Napoli e dintorni descritti e dipinti (Customs and Traditions of Naples and its Surroundings, Described and Painted), which is still one of the most valuable references for the study of the characters and popular customs of mid-nineteenth-century Naples. The Art Gallery of the Civic Museums of Vasto has dedicated a room to Nicola Palizzi, in which many of his works are exhibited.
