Still Life with Grapes
Oil on canvas, lined. By Jacob van Es.
Dimensions : 68 x 96 cm
An Antwerp painter best known for his still lifes, he is, along with Osias Beert and Clara Peeters, one of the main representatives of the first generation of Flemish painting in this genre.
Although biographical data on van Es is scarce, his success as an artist is attested by the fact that his works were part of many 17th century collections and even the inventory of the great painter Rubens includes two of his paintings.
As Master of the Guild in 1648, he also enjoyed a high status among the great Antwerp artists and became friends with Jacob Jordaens, Cornelis Schut and Deodat del Monte, who were also the godparents of his children.
