This Düsseldorf-born artist trained at the Decorative School and the Academy of Fine Arts in his native city, where he showed an early interest in the human body in a naturalist style. He went to Paris in 1910 for a six-year stay where he rubbed shoulders with the greatest artists of the time, Brancusi, Rodin, Maillot, Modigliani and Archipenko: his style then evolved towards greater expressiveness and interiority.
