Suffering from illness, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux isolated himself in Dieppe at the home of his friend Alexandre Dumas to recover in the summer of 1874. He met his young model, a young fisherwoman, during a walk in Puys and was struck by the beauty of this figure dressed in worn rags. Puys or the Fisherwoman of Vignots is the last work of the sculptor to be published.
