Provenance : Collection of Mr Georges Marin, general manager of the Plaza Athénée from 1963 and then of his niece.
On the back of the frame, an annotation in the hand of Mr. Georges Marin mentions: "On January 26, 1966, Mr. Marc Chagall dined in the large dining room of the Hotel Plaza-Athénée, 25 avenue Montaigne - Paris (8e) with Mr. & Mrs. Kostelitz. At the end of the dinner, Mr. Marc Chagall pencilled this drawing on the tablecloth, which he enhanced with colour using Mrs. Kostelitz's red stick. G. Ira and Georges Kostelitz were friends of Marc Chagall, who commissioned three mosaic murals and sculptures for their mansion. This decoration, known as the "Cour Chagall", is now deposited in the Pierre Gianadda Foundation in Martigny, Switzerland.
