Aristide Maillol, French 1861-1944- Etude De Nu (Femme Accroupie); sanguine on buff paper, stamped with monogram lower right, 32x24cm Provenance: Christie's London, 5 February 2016, lot 40; Private Collection, London Note: The present work demonstrates Maillol’s preoccupation with the representation of the female figure, which dominates the artist’s work. It also gestures towards Maillol’s practice as a sculptor, particularly in its emphasis on the form and mass of the sitter, alongside the artist’s ability to convey a sense of movement in a static image. Sculptures by Maillol are in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, with his bronzes also on display at the grand staircase of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. The Musée Maillol Banyuls-sur-Mer and the Musée Maillol in Paris are both dedicated to Maillol’s work. He has also been the subject of major retrospectives at a number of prestigious institutions throughout the 20th century, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1941); Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C. (1951); Haus der Kunst, Munich (1962); the Guggenheim Museum (1975); and the Künsthaus Zurich, Zurich (2012). Please refer to department for condition report
