VICTOR CHARRETON (1864-1937) PRINTEMPS EN BRETAGNE Oil on canvas Signed lower right Oil on canvas; signed lower right 60 X 73,5 CM - 23 5/8 X 29 in. PROVENANCE Private collection, France. BIBLIOGRAPHY Robert et Bertrand Chatin, Victor Charreton, vie et œuvre, Imprimerie Watel, Brioude : 1995, n° 964 (described and reproduced). "Charreton has always known and appreciated Brittany: his first amateur paintings represent landscapes of Dauphiné and Brittany. From 1906 onwards, unless it was impossible, he stayed there for long periods, usually in the summer, until 1924. He always lived by the sea in Finistère (Bénodet, Douarnenez, Ploaré, Pont-Aven and Saint-Guénolé) but sometimes also in Arradon, Cancale, Dinard or Ploumanech. [...] The palette of the works in Brittany is very characteristic, much less contrasted with melted tones, effects of mist and very often a blue spot which evokes the nearby sea. [Trees are always very present in Charreton's work. In his sketchbooks they are the subject of numerous sketches, in particular chestnut trees, olive trees and in Brittany willows." Robert and Bertrand Chatin, op. cit. p. 75.
