GALLE, Philip [Epitome of the Theatre of the World by Abraham Ortelius]. [Antwerp Plantin; Ph. Galle 1588] Oblong 8vo: [6]-94-[3] pp; 93 (of 94) pl. within pagination (title, pl. 86 "Persia" and last pl. of table missing, sm. wormholes repaired, upper margin cut occ. affecting the pagination and the title in the upper margin, sl. dampstained, occ. ms. annotation). Contemp. half sheep, spine with 2 bands (joints broken, used). 3rd French edition, but in fact the 1st of a new series of Galle's innovative pocket-size atlases, i.e., a small-scale ed. (1st ed.: Galle, 1577) of Ortelius' groundbreaking large folio atlas. Galle was not satisfied with the quality of the maps in the previous editions and therefore replaced ca. 18 maps in this edition. It was intended for travelers and students making it a very successful publication from the 1st ed. onwards.
