LAUTRÉAMONT The Songs of Maldoror. (Songs I, II, III, IV, V, VI). Paris ; Bruxelles chez tous les Libraires (Bruxelles, typ. de E. Wittmann) 1874 Pet. in-8°. Bradel half black morocco with frame signed by Delapierre, paper boards in white, grey and green tones, spine titled in gold, gilt head, few trimmings, chamois cover on board. (small tears around the edges). Original second edition with new title, title and cover. The first edition had been printed in 1869 in Paris by Lacroix-Verboeckhoven but the company did not dare to put the book on sale for fear of legal proceedings. A few copies were distributed by Lautréamont but they are very rare. Four years later, almost the entire print run was bought by Rozez in Brussels, but the success of the book only really began after its rediscovery by the poets of "La Jeune Belgique", later relayed by the Surrealists, Philippe Soupault and then Louis Aragon and André Breton. Ref. Vicar V:103. - Talvart and Place XI:341. - In French in the text, 293.
