Spanish School. Gothic. 15th century._x000D_ "Saint Peter of Verona"_x000D_ Tempera and gold ground on panel. 104 x 48 cm._x000D_ Peter of Verona, also known as Saint Peter the Martyr, is considered to be the first of the martyrs of the Dominican Order. He died in 1252, at the hands of heretics from Lombardy, where he was an inquisitor. _x000D_ He is depicted dressed in a Dominican habit, and with the attributes that correspond to him, the main one being a knife stuck horizontally into the top of his head, as well as a dagger which pierces his chest, the palm of martyrdom and the book.
