GOTT WILLIAM: (1897-1942) British Lieutenant-General who served with the British Eighth Army during World War II. In August 1942 Gott was appointed as successor to General Claude Auchinleck as commander of the Eighth Army. On the way to take up his command he was killed when his plane was shot down. His death led to the appointment of Lieutenant-General B. L. Montgomery in his place. An extremely rare blue ink signature ('W. H. E. Gott') on a small 12mo piece with his typed rank ('Lieut Gen.
