Rainbow Cubist Houses, 1920
Pastel, charcoal and gouache on paper
41 x 44 cm on view
Signed and dated lower left in pencil Marcel-Lenoir 1920
We thank Mrs Marie Ange Namy for having confirmed the authenticity of this work.
In this work dated 1920, Marcel-Lenoir is interested in the architecture of small buildings. Under a sky that is cream-coloured because of the reserve of the paper and punctuated with rectangular and square blue touches, imposing houses rise up, some of which have sloping roofs. The artist reveals a colourful harmony of yellow, blue, green, ochre, red and black, which brighten and illuminate this supernatural rainbow house. The pastelist, with a colorist soul, sings a poetic melody on a cubist background, halfway between cubism and abstraction, in a fantasized unreal landscape.
