Female icon imploring the sky, 1907-1908
Black ink, wash, white gouache
43 x 26.3 cm
Signed lower right Marcel Lenoir
We would like to thank Madame Marie Ange Namy for confirming the authenticity of this work.
Here Marcel-Lenoir focuses on a female icon, in a theatrical figure. She seems to be imploring, in communion with nature and the sky, dressed in an antique tunic. Pablo Picasso also devoted himself to this theme in 1902. We can compare this iconography with the dances of Isadora Duncan, admired and represented by the artist. Marcel-Lenoir remains faithful to the drawing, here with a black ink pen in hatching, with streaked highlights in white gouache all over the body. The background is decorated with grey and brown ink washes. Marcel-Lenoir embodies a master of the wash and brilliantly joins this technique dear to Victor Hugo.
