Jan HUMBERT (Amsterdam 1734-1794). Portrait of a woman with a pearl necklace, leaning against a balustrade. Canvas. Signed and dated lower left: painted by I. Humbert 1767. Dimensions : 74,5x58,5 cm. Humbert was the main history painter and portraitist of the second half of the 18th century at the court of the Orange-Nassau in The Hague, and the father of the painter and scholar David Pierre Giottino Humbert de Superville (1770-1849). Jan Humbert came from a family of publishers of Genevan descent who had settled in Amsterdam. He studied in Paris, probably with Joseph-Marie Vien, and then in The Hague. The rocaille style of this charming painting evokes the portraits of François-Hubert Drouais of the same date, with this taste for the description of ribbons and flowers, while the figure leaning on a windowsill belongs to a Dutch tradition dating back to the 17th century. Expert: Stéphane Pinta, Turquin firm Framing: 90x81 cm
