Amélie DAUBIGNY (Paris 1796-1861). Portrait of Louis-Antoine VIEL, sub
prefect of Briançon, then prefect of Chinon, officer of the Legion of Honor. Gouache on ivory, circa 1840, signed lower left. 15 x 12 cm. The portrait shows Louis-Antoine Viel in bust and prefect's uniform wearing the tricolour scarf and the officer's star of the Legion of Honour with crown. In his left hand he is holding a "memoir on navigations". Louis-Antoine Viel was born in Heugueville-sur-sienne (Manche) on January 5, 1785, son of Julien Isaac Viel, and married Anne de Liégeard. They had a daughter Henriette-Adélaïde Viel who married Eugène Bois, deputy of Finistère. Gilt bronze wooden frame of the period.
