SPANISH RENAISSANCE FRAME Spain, 16th century Gilded and polychromed wood; original ironwork and fastener Good condition H. 118 x W. 120 cm Interior dimensions, when viewed : H. 37,5 , W. 52,5 cm This carved and gilded wood frame displays a rich ornamentation of scrolls, foliage and pomegranates around a thick moulded frieze of floral motifs. This is a perfect example of Spanish work of the 16th century. The exuberance of the decoration is enhanced by vivid touches of polychromy. The bunches of fruit are painted as well as a small cordial tableautin, perhaps reminiscent of the mysticism of its recipient.
