DALMATIC Italy, 16th century Polychrome brocatelles lined with buckram, applied decoration
Good condition
H. 123 cm, W. 147 cm
This dalmatic, lined with blue buckram, is composed of two brocatelles bordered by a yellow and blue fringed braid.
The brocatelles here have applied decoration of pomegranates and foliage contrasting with the coloured twill ground. The orphrey is cut from a green fabric on a lemon yellow background. It illuminates the rest of the garment in cream monochrome on a saffron yellow twill background.
The shimmering colours of our dalmatic evoke those worn by the angels in the works of the Italian Renaissance. Servants of God, angels wore the same liturgical vestment as priests and deacons.
