PAIR OF PUTTI HIGHLIGHTS Northern Italy, 16th century Limestone
Repaired damage and missing legs of the one carrying the shield on the right side
H. 66 cm; W. 33 cm; D. 21 cm
These two winged putti, forming a pair, carry a flaming torch from a floral chalice in one hand and, with the other, present a decorative shield. The targe, whose shape is typically Italian, shows a hunting horn suspended by a ribbon above a stocky animal with an elongated snout, probably a wild boar, represented in a rather realistic way.
Our two putti, carved in high relief, probably belonged to a monumental set, a fireplace facing for example.
