Rare large jiuzun vase
Vietnam, Hán-Việt period, 1st-3rd century,
Bronze with archaeological patina, H. 39.5 cm - D. 31.5 cm
This exceptional jiuzun, both in terms of size and decoration, has a double lid, the upper one of which is hinged and rests on three bear-shaped feet. It is decorated with tightly packed bosses in horizontal bands separated by bare bands. Two taotie masks with rings appear on the central band.
The existence of these large drinking vessels is attested by representations on stamped funerary bricks such as the one found in Peng'an (Sichuan province) dating from the Han period and showing a scene of acrobats.
