Openwork pediped axe
Vietnam, Đông Sơn culture, 3°-1° century BCE,
Bronze with archaeological patina, 9 x 10 cm
Unlike the other axes, this one, pediped and openwork, with geometric decoration in slight relief (oblique, vertical lines, etc.), is intended for ritual use as shown by certain representations on bronze drums. The perforation at the end of the blade was used to hang a bell.
Similar pieces have been found at Đông Sơn (by Olov Janse, 1934-35, Musée Cernuschi, Paris) or at Thiệu Dương.
