Le couronnement de la rosière, France, ca. 1780
Folded fan, the cream silk sheet painted with compositions on the theme of love framing a scene emblematic of the manners and customs of the last years of the 18th century. A young village girl dressed in white, wearing the cordon of the Order of the Holy Spirit, receives a crown of roses from the lord of the village. She is thus distinguished for the purity of her morals and the example of her life. A lady of good society on the right probably evokes Madame de Genlis who was one of the first to support these manifestations recognizing virtue.
Fisherman sketched on the reverse.
Mounting in ivory* finely cut, engraved and gilded with medallions and foliage.
