Particular map of the duchy of Burgundy, geometrically surveyed by order of M.M. the elected generals of the province, in consequence of the decree of the States of 1751, divided by dioceses, bailliages and subdelegations, forming part of the general map of France, surveyed by order of the king and by the geographers of His Majesty under the direction of Mrs. Cassini, Camus and Montigny of the Académie rle. des Sciences, n.d., 1763 Large map of 15 sheets in-folio with canvas (59 x 90 cm). Good condition (a few small stains and insect holes on one). In a folio holder in full vellum binding (61.5 x 48 cm) (accidents). Bears two glued leaves with the description of the leaves as well as a reassembly plan. Louis XV had expressed the will to establish a general map of France and had entrusted this mission to Cassini de Thury. The mission lasted nearly fifty years, establishing the first general and particular map of the kingdom and, from a cartographic point of view, the first to be based on geodetic triangulation. Some provincial states - Burgundy being the first - suggested to Cassini that he draw up the particular maps of their region himself, which obviously interested the cartographer. Moreover, these particular maps are often superior, in form and content, to the corresponding plates of the Carte de France.
