Jean Chappe was born in Reims His work is still little known. Until 1914, the Musée des Beaux Arts de Reims kept two still lifes, one of which was signed and dated 1688 (see M. Faré, La nature morte au XVIIe siècle, Fribourg, 1974, p. 356). We can compare our painting with the Barking Spaniel (Canvas, same dimensions) signed and dated 169... and kept in a private collection (see E. Coatalem, La nature morte française au XVIIe siècle, Dijon, 2014, reproduced p. 144).
