ATTRIBUTED TO FRANCESCO MONTELLATICI, CALLED CECCO BRAVO (1607-1661) LA TENTATION Canvas Old restorations Without frame Attr. to F. Montellatici called Cecco Bravo, The temptation, canvas, without frame, old restorations 107 x 163 cm - 42,1 x 64,2 in. Having started out as a brilliant fresco decorator (Florence, Santissima Annunziata, Casa Buonarroti in 1636, Pitti Palace in 1637), the anti-academic character of Cecco Bravo's painting prevented him from continuing in this direction and he devoted himself to paintings in which the subjects were treated in a strange and fantastic manner. Together with Sebastiano Mazzoni, he represents the Venetian trend of brilliant brushstrokes and sparkling light of Florentine Seicento painting. Another version of this composition is preserved in a private Florentine collection (given to Cecco Bravo, repr. in Mina Gregori, "A Cross-Section of Florentine Seicento painting. The Piero Bigongiari Collection", Apollo, July 1974, n°149, p.224, ill.16).
