dating: 1864 - 1865 provenance: USA, Round, 30' rifled, 50 Rimfire cal barrel. Foresight and foldaway rear sight. Frame marked 'MERIDEN MAN.FG CO. / MERIDEN CONN.' and 'KENTUCKY'. The upper tang with Triplett & Scott patent marking of 1864. Tubular magazine inside the butt. Smooth wooden butt and fore-end. Special loading mechanism that is activated by turning the front section of the frame on the central pin; this movement allows the empty case to be removed and a new cartridge to be automatically inserted from the butt stock. The counterplate is marked 'KENTUCKY'. Refreshed blueing. Working mechanics, Serial no. '29xx'. Estimated production of about 5000 examples (about 2000 with 22' barrel and 3000 with 30' barrel), commissioned by the State of Kentucky to arm the troops of the 'Home Guard'.
