Charles Lapicque (French, 1898-1988) Invitation to Wisdom, 1961 Height 97, Width 162 cm. (Provenance: - Daniel Malingue gallery, number 1763, - Alain and Violette Merle collection. Bibliography: - Philippe Bouchet, "Charles Lapicque, Le Dérangeur", éd. Thalia, 2009, close work pp. 50 and following, dating from 1961. - Bernard Balanci, "Charles Lapicque, Catalogue raisonné de l'œuvre peint et de la sculpture", Mayer editions, 1973, close work n°490. In the series of the Ming Tiger painted in 1961, Lapicque introduces a fawn "in the middle of silks and pagodas". He demonstrates his pictorial fascination for the feline's stripes. Camouflaged in this cross-hatched environment, the animal's movement unfolds through the narrowing of the brushstroke. An Asian symbol of justice, the tiger enters an assembly of wise men. The only protagonist in the scene with eyes, it acts as an admonisher. The artist's chromatic mastery is at its peak here.
