48. DUPATY (Jean Baptiste Mercier). Letters on Italy in 1785. Rome (Paris), De Senne, 1788 (and 1790). 2 vols. in-8, vii, 320 p., 320 p., red half calf with smooth spine. First edition of this account of a journey in the south of France and in Italy, where the customs of the inhabitants are more extensively described than the eternal monuments. The hypocrisy of the clergy is too often underlined for the work to escape being put on the index.
Lack of paper on the last page of the table, freckles, misplaced leaves in the second volume. What will have deceived the binder is the presence of a supplementary letter edited in 1790 by Desenne, which should have been in the final supplement.
