Charles Georges DUFRESNE (1876 - 1938) - Paul et Virginie, 1921 - Oil on canvas, mounted on panel, signed in the lower middle, in a frame with a scalloped view - 63 x 167 cm - TO -BE - Painting executed for the back of a sofa - Provenance : - - Galerie Motte, Paris-Geneva - - Hirsch Adler Galleries, London - - We would like to thank Thomas and Jean-Charles Dufresne who kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work and who indicated that : It is a work, in 1921, for the back of the sofa Paul and Virgine. - The sofa was first exhibited by Süe and Mare in 1925 at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs (see for example the exhibition catalogue: Charles Dufresne, L'Annonciade, Saint-Tropez, 2012, pp. 22-23, 28). About it, L'Amour de l'art n° 9 of November 1932 (p. 312), writes: "It is one of the most beautiful among the rare presentable tapestries of our time. Undoubtedly, with those of Dufy and the tapestries with the point of Lurçat, it is almost all that there is to retain of the tapestry of this time.
