Biscuit porcelain. Brand: waves in blue; "Eneret" and "T", impressed. Height 32.2 cm. Conservation: good; middle finger of the right hand partly missing; insignificant chipping to the lower edge of the base, , This Adonis is taken from a famous marble statue made by the Danish sculptor Berthel Thorvaldsen (Copenhagen 1770 - 1844) and preserved in Munich, Neue Pinakothek. An exponent of Neoclassicism and Canova's greatest rival, Thorvaldsen was commissioned in 1808 by Prince Ludwig of Bavaria to make the Adonis, which was not finished until 1832. Made in life-size, it shows a naked young man leaning against a tree trunk in a posture reminiscent of the portraits of the divinities of ancient Greece.
